I
offer drum lessons either at my own home studio or at
the students home if they have their own kit.
I usually teach 30 or 60 minute lessons. Longer lessons
are possible if required but for most students, especially
beginners, 60 minute lessons are usually enough. The
students are free to have their lessons as frequently
as it suits them and are not obligated to have them
at regular intervals.
Small children usually find 60 minute lessons a bit
long and start to lose concentration. My normal advice
for them is to only have 30 minute lessons ideally once
a week.
If a student would like lessons in their own home 60
minutes is the minimum lesson charge. Also for me to
visit them it has to be within a reasonable distance
for me to travel. I am based at Seymour Drive, Bromley
Common and consider a 15 to 20 minute drive to a students
home to be reasonable. I am prepared to travel further
distances but would obviously have to charge accordingly.
I prefer students if possible to come to my studio for
lessons as it saves me traveling time, therefore giving
me more time to fit in extra students. It also benefits
the student as my studio is equipped with drum machines,
amps and computer programs like Guitar Pro and Guitar
and Drum trainer. Guitar Pro is mainly a guitar tab
program but also has drum tabs that can help learning
songs and allows me to give the student tab files in
PDF form of any songs they are leaning. Guitar and Drum
Trainer is a program that allows me to slow songs down,
re tune them and create loops for playing along to.
All of these benefits make lessons in my studio far
more enjoyable and productive.

I tailor my lessons to each students requirements. If
they only want me to teach them how to drum along to their
favourite songs then that is what I do. If on the other
hand they want to learn how to play various styles and
rhythms, and how to play rolls and fills then I teach
them what they need to know and the techniques necessary.
My personal style is Rock and Blues through to Heavy Metal
but I can teach the basics of Rock, Blues, Rock and Roll,
Heavy Metal (including double pedal), Grunge, Punk, 60's
Soul, Funk, Reggae, Pop and most other types of music.
l can teach playing to a click for better time keeping
if required which helps with the ability to play to click
tracks whether live or in recording. I can also teach
how to improvise various rhythms and rhythmical styles
including suitable rolls and fills to help a students
ability to improvise in jams and live performances. This
can also help their ability to come up with interesting
rhythms and fills if they should ever join a band writing
original songs.
Whatever I teach I always try to make the lessons as much
fun as possible while still motivating the student and
helping them advance their playing in whatever direction
they want. If they like, once a student reaches a level
where they can play in a band situation I may be able
to organize a jam session with some of my guitar and bass
students. This will depend on what style they are playing
and what suitable students I have at that time.
If a student is interested in taking qualifications in
drumming I recommend the Rockschool graded music exams
and I can teach them the sight reading and everything
they need to know to enter the exams. These are held at
various venues at regular intervals. For more information
on Rockschool exams there is a link to their website on
the links page. I am also happy to help anyone working
on other grading systems to prepare for their exams.
For
any other information on what I can teach please contact
me from the contact page.
